Industry urges Commission to advance, not withdraw the Regulation on Standard Essential Patents

CLEPA, along with 63 organisations, including companies and trade associations, have expressed their deep concern over the European Commission’s plan to withdraw the proposed Standard Essential Patents (SEP) Regulation, urging co-legislators to advance it instead.

The Commission’s 11 February 2025 legislative work programme included SEP Regulation on its withdrawal list, a move the signatories view as a setback for Europe’s competitiveness and innovation. With broad industry support, the SEP Regulation is seen as essential for ensuring a transparent, predictable, and fair licensing system for standard essential patents.
