"Skills Councils" Project

IDENTIFICATION OF NATIONAL JOBS AND

SKILLS COUNCILS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

Project Overview

Ensuring the availability of the right kind of skills and competence is imperative for the future of a competitive European automotive industry and securing employment opportunities. Across Europe a range of different bodies are working on anticipating skills and labour market needs, specifically for the automotive industry, providing information for different stakeholders. In its Communication on clean and energy efficient vehicles, the European Commission has proposed the establishment of a European Sectoral Skills Council with the view to better anticipate and identify the emerging skills and qualifications required to produce vehicles in the future.

Against this background, CLEPA (European Association of Automotive Suppliers), CEEMET (European Employers’ organisation for the Metal, Engineering and Technology-based Industries), EMF (European Metalworkers Federation) and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) launched a project in December 2010, co-funded by the European Commission, to investigate the potential for the establishment of a European skills and employment council for the automotive sector. The objective of this initial project is to:

1.      Identify those structures existing in the EU at national and regional level whose mission is to examine labour market, human resources and skills development in the automotive sector;

2.      Assess the feasibility and added value of setting up a European network of such national and regional ‘sector councils on skills and jobs’ in the automotive sector based on the potential interest of the identified bodies to participate in such a network, exchanging information and good practice at the European level.
