The Weights and Dimensions Directive stands amongst a group of legislative proposals crucial for steering the transition towards a more sustainable and safer transport system. In this position paper CLEPA provides an assessment of the proposed amendments. It explores the implication for the industry and offers recommendations to facilitate the advancement of sustainable mobility in Europe.
As an enabler of smart, safe and sustainable mobility, CLEPA is a key stakeholder in the automotive value chain and supports the review of the framework for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from heavy-duty vehicles in the European Union. To reach carbon neutrality by 2050 in the most cost-effective manner, protecting competitiveness, employment and consumers, automotive suppliers have put together key recommendations in this position paper.

This position paper focuses on the supply chain due diligence component of the EU sustainable corporate governance framework. A harmonised framework for supply chain due diligence can under the right conditions support and reinforce automotive supplier efforts to reduce the sector’s environmental footprint and avoid human rights infringements along the value chain. The EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy is intended to direct financing to sustainable activities. The delegated act on sustainable activities for climate change adaptation and mitigation objectives provides screening criteria that explicitly recognise the contribution of the manufacturing of hydrogen vehicles and components, batteries and electric vehicles (EV) to the realisation of climate objectives. The delegated act however does not address EV components explicitly. This distinction between vehicle assembly and component production in the implementation of the EU taxonomy would disadvantage automotive suppliers over vehicle manufacturers. >>Find out more
This paper is a contribution by the automotive suppliers’ industry in Europe to the debate on the proposal for a Batteries Regulation. As key stakeholders in the battery value chain, automotive suppliers acknowledge the ambition of the Batteries Regulation for sustainability over the whole lifecycle of batteries. This is in line with their own continuous effort to minimise the environmental impact of their products through high performances, long lifetime and circular management (repair, remanufacturing, recycling).
